How it Started
In 2016, I embarked on my academic journey in computer science at The University of York. Faced with the reality that my dad wouldn't be able to pick me up from university, I explored the inconvenience of transporting my belongings home by bus, but I didn’t fancy that much. I then contacted a nearby self-storage facility, which charged me ridiculously high prices for a super archaic service.
Determined to find a better way, the following year I invested my student loan into a van and made a bulk purchase of cardboard boxes. I launched kitkeeper.co.uk and began offering a tailored box-by-box service to my friends at uni. The service was straightforward: I would provide the boxes, the students packed their items, and I would store them over the summer, before redelivering them to their new accommodation at the start of the next term. Customers loved the service and Kit Keeper was born.

How it Launched
My entrepreneurial efforts paid off in 2017 when I won £500 in the SantanderUniversity pitching competition. As word spread, the demand for Kit Keeper’sservices grew, and we had to rent larger spaces to accommodate the influx of boxes. n 2019, we won both the York Festival of Ideas Award and the Duke of York Young Erepreneur Award. We also began sponsoring local sports teams and societies, which helped to raise the brand’s profile in the student community.
HOW IT'S GOING
By 2021 , with support from The University of York, The Princes Trust, InnovateUK, and a group of business angels, the business had branches out to 40 cities, becoming the UK's top-rated student storage provider in the process.
Since then, we have continued to invest heavily in our technology and formed a series of partnerships with logistics and storage providers, as well as university accommodation providers, to offer collection and delivery services nationwide. Kit Keeper also now works globally in support of the UK’s vibrant international student community.
Today in 2024, with help from the fantastic Kit Keeper team, we are one of the largest and most popular dedicated student storage companies in the country. We have now stored or shipped over 10,000 boxes for thousands of happy customers, with our long-term goal to be the preferred choice for all university students storage and shipping needs.
Since then, we have continued to invest heavily in our technology and formed a series of partnerships with logistics and storage providers, as well as university accommodation providers, to offer collection and delivery services nationwide. Kit Keeper also now works globally in support of the UK’s vibrant international student community.
